German food words game: Brezel, Brötchen and Spätzle
Order breakfast in Munich and you ask for a Semmel. Do the same in Berlin and it is a Schrippe. Ten German food words, their articles and a few regional surprises.
What does it mean, or which article is right?
the pretzel
the bread roll
egg noodles
the cake
juice or wine with sparkling water
cold cuts
the potato
the mustard
Food words are some of the first German words you need, and each one comes with its article: der Kuchen, die Kartoffel, das Brötchen. Learning the article together with the word saves you a lot of guessing later.
German also changes from region to region. The same bread roll is a Brötchen, a Semmel or a Schrippe depending on where you buy it, and in Austria a potato can be an Erdapfel.
