Make or do game: do you make a mistake or do one?
Make a mistake or do a mistake? Do your homework or make it? Choose the right verb in ten everyday English phrases.
Which verb completes the sentence?
get something wrong
finish schoolwork at home
choose what to do
wash the plates and cups
start new friendships
buy and sell, work with companies
call someone
try as hard as you can
Many languages have one verb where English has two, make and do, so learners often mix them up. As a general rule, do is for tasks, work and activities, and make is for creating, producing or causing something.
The rule has exceptions, like make the bed and do someone a favour, so learn each phrase whole, verb and noun together. The more English you read and hear, the more natural the right verb will sound.
