CEFR levels poster: A1 to C2 on one page
The six language levels used across Europe and far beyond, with what you can do at each one.
The six levels
A1
Beginner
You understand and use everyday expressions and very simple sentences, and can introduce yourself, if people speak slowly.
A2
Elementary
You get by in simple, familiar situations such as shopping, work and where you live.
B1
Intermediate
You handle most situations while traveling, talk about experiences and plans, and explain your opinions briefly.
B2
Upper intermediate
You follow the main ideas of complex texts and talk with native speakers with ease on both sides.
C1
Advanced
You use the language flexibly for social life, study and work, and write clear, well-structured texts.
C2
Proficient
You understand almost everything with ease and express yourself precisely, even on fine shades of meaning.
Good to remember
A1 and A2 are the basic user, B1 and B2 the independent user, C1 and C2 the proficient user. Most people are stronger in some skills than others, often reading more than speaking.

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) describes language ability in six levels, from A1 for beginners to C2 for mastery. Schools, universities, employers and exam boards use it to say what level they ask for.
